Butterfly topiary tree

"I purchased a butterfly topiary tree last year and it bloomed until frost. I live in Zone 5. I did not prune. So far this year it has not started greening up. Thank you."

By butterfly topiary tree, do you mean a butterfly bush (Buddleja) that was pruned into a tree form? Butterfly bush is usually root hardy in Zone 5, but often dies back to the ground over winter. This last winter was severe enough that many butterfly bush plants died completely in Zone 5. It's possible that it will still sprout from the roots, so you might give it a couple more weeks, but I suspect that your topiary tree is dead.
