Black spots on new leaves of hydrangea

I recently planted a pink hydrangea which I believe is a mophead. The leaves turned black at the edges, became slimy, and half of the leaves just rotted away, leaving only half a leaf. New leaves are sprouting, but some of them have black spots. What is causing this? The flowers are turning brownish and dropping off. Will new flowers return this season?

"Hi,

Thanks for writing. It sounds like your hydrangea may be diseased --- but without being able to see the disease, I can't say for sure what it is or if it needs to be treated or not. But, here's a guide to some common ones --- if you check out this site you should be able to match up the disease to one of the pictures.
