Azalea bushes were butchered!

My azalea bushes were destroyed after all the snow and ice during the winter. They are currently mostly broken branches and very very thinned out. I can see through them when before they were thick with branches and leaves. Is there any way to fix this or will I have to rip them out and start over? They've been in my yard for 10+ years.

Thanks for writing. At this point, all you can do is wait for them to put on new growth and see how they recover. It may take two or three years, but I'd guess they'll look good for you again.

Note: If any branches are broken and just hanging off the plant, I'd remove those. But other than that, patience is the best suggestion.
