To get good soil for growing watermelons first time in Louisville, Ky
Watermelons don't need any special soil treatment to grow. However, they do need good drainage and warm conditions. Sandy soils are ideal, but you can grow watermelons on heavier soils, too, especially if you plant them in raised beds, and amend the soil with compost or other organic matter to loosen the soil. Watermelons need a fair amount of nitrogen to grow vigorous vines, but excess nitrogen impairs fruit quality and production. Typically they need a couple pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, but to be certain, it is advisable to have a soil test done.
