Should I mulch around the trunk of my new tree, or let the grass grow back?
A layer of mulch 2-4 inches deep around your newly planted tree will save water, decrease stress on the tree, and ensure that grass doesn't compete with the tree for nutrients. The ring of mulch also will keep you and your lawn mower away from the trunk and reduce nicks in the bark, which open up paths for insects and disease to get in. Keep the mulch about 3-4 inches from the trunk to keep rodents from hiding there and gnawing the tree bark. Make the ring of mulch at least as wide as the spread of branches on your newly planted tree.
