How can I amend clay soil?

I want to start a garden, but the soil in my backyard is clay. I've moistened and stirred it up and it is still clumpy. What should I use to amend this soil? Will anything be able to grow in it?

Hi, Clay soil can be a nightmare to deal with, but the only surefire method I know of fixing the problem is by adding as much organic matter as possible. Compost, rotted manure, leaf mold or fresh topsoil will help a lot. You'll need to add several inches of this material and mix it in and you'll need to continue to do this at least once a year.
