Dry soil in shade

"I have an area under and around a huge pine tree that I would like to plant flowers. It is mostly shade but some sun does get in. I have tried planting different plants in this area without alot of luck. The soil is dry and there are a lot of roots from the tree. What plants do well in dry shady soil? Thank you in advance for you help. Elaine Gross "

Sadly, there's not much you can do with this situation. Planting under pines, spruces or shallow-rooted trees such as maples is almost impossible. You could grow shade-loving plants in containers under these trees if there's room, but nothing will be able to survive directly underneath the trees."
