Why do the roses I bought have waxy stems?

I bought a rose plant this spring. Its stems came covered with wax. What is it for, and how do I get it off?

The wax is there to keep the rose from drying out while it's at the store. You don't need to do anything to remove it. It won't harm your plant, and it will wear off soon after the rose is planted in the garden.
