Planting under rose trees

"I live in Southern Calif. I have 3 rose trees that are doing wonderful ( 3 years old). They are in big brick planters out front. Is it okay to plant Red Apple Iceplant in the bottom of the planters? The rose trees bloom constantly and I didn't want to smother their roots. My other question is, if it is okay, what kind of food should I use that would not bother the iceplant. Thank you very much"

"Hi
Your rose trees should be fine. I grow a variety of annual flowers under my rose trees all the time. I recommend a slow-release granular fertilizer such as Osmocote. It's available at most garden centers or home stores."
