branch like stalks growing out of rose bush

I have Northern winter hardy roses and this year one of them has shot up a stalk or branch higher than the plant, about two inches around really thorny and a few roses on the tips. Is this a sucker or should I leave it alone?

You don't say what kind of rose this is, but if it's a grafted rose this sounds definitely like a sucker from the root stock. Most grafted roses are grown on wild rose root stock and sometimes they will develop a huge sucker or like you descrbe."
