black spot/rust on roses?

Last year, after a wet spring, my new rose 'tree' had brownish leaves with orange fuzzy growth on the underneath of the affected leaves. I found nothing that described this in any of my gardening books. what is this? and will it come back this year?

Hi,

Thanks for writing. It sounds like rust, a relatively common disease of roses.

The disease overwinters on dead leaves --- so be sure to rake away of last year's leaves from around your plant before your rose leafs out this year. Because cool, moist weather favors the growth of rust disease, you may also want to spray your roses with a fungicide (either commercial or organic) through the spring to help prevent the rust from taking hold.

Good luck. I hope this helps!
