I have two mature lilac bushes which are not blooming as fully as they used to. When do I prune them for greatest blooming potential--or do I prune? What makes more blooms on lilacs?
Old lilacs may need to be rejuvenated by pruning. The best time for light pruning on lilacs is shortly after they finish bloom. However, if you want to cut them back severely to stimulate new growth, late winter is the best time to do it.
