cutting back shrubs and trees

I live in Ashford, WA and only one week left in October. I want to cut-back shrubs and prune trees in my yard, that have been neglected. It's approximately 60 degrees. Is it the right time of year to cut back or will it hurt my shrubs and trees?

Hi, I'm so it's taken so long to get back to you, but our Garden Doctor service was down almost a month for repairs. Anyway, generally, it's best to prune deciduous trees and shrubs in the winter when they are dormant. There are some exceptions to this, but you can check individual plant requirements in our Plant Encyclopedia on this website. Evergreens are better pruned in the spring just as they are developing new growth.
