When to Prune Mums?
You can cut back hardy garden mums after they have been killed back by frost. Or you can wait until next spring, and cut them back before growth begins. Leaving the dead stalks in place helps hold snow in place over winter and may aid in winter survival. On the other hand, if the mums had any disease or insect problems this year, it would be good to remove and destroy the foliage.
