When is a good time to cut back ornamental grasses during the winter months?

I left my ornamental grasses standing during the winter. When should I cut them back?

You were smart to leave the grasses standing through the winter. Not only do they add a strong architectural element to the winter garden, the seed heads also provide food for many birds. Shear grasses to about 4 inches above the ground in late winter, just before the plants begin growing.
