Trimming off old stalks on daylilys

Should I wait until the stalks on the daylilys turn brown and then pull them out or can I cut them off when they are green? I am talking about the flower stalks, not the leaves on the plants...this would be after all the flowers are gone. Should you let some go to seed or if you don't want seeds can you pull the seed pods off if they start forming? I have been pulling the pods off.. thank you...Sherry

Hi Sherry,

I'd cut out a stalk as soon as all the flowers on that stalk have faded. That will stop your daylilies from producing seeds so they perform better next year. (If they put energy into producing seeds, they won't put on as good of a display next year.)
