No Plumes on my astilbe

Do I have to cut back my astilbe in order for it to produce plumes? I live in Central Canada and It is the first week of july and no sign of any blooms on my astilbe.

Thanks for writing. You should not need to do anything special to astilbe to get them to bloom.

That said, you do want to be sure to give them good growing conditions. If the plants get too stressed (not enough water, too much dense shade, etc.), they may not be able to produce blooms that year. Also, if you just planted them this year, they may be putting their energy into getting established instead of blooming (and that's a good thing for you because it means even though you have to be patient, they'll do better next year than if they bloomed this year, too).
