Mums

How many years do Mum plants last in Zone 5? I've had mine 8 years. Nothing green is coming up yet this year, as of yet. Bridget

Mums will overwinter successfully when the variety is hardy to the zone of the garden. But even the hardiest mums will suffer from a hard freeze that arrives after the plants have put out tender new growth in the spring. I've lost about half of the mums in my garden to this year's late frosts. If you've had the same pattern of early warming and sudden cold spells, it could be the plants were frozen. Mums may also be lost if they go into the winter too dry. Water well until late in the fall.
