Is my Hibiscus dead?

I live in Kentucky and planted two President Hibiscus last April all summer long they were beautiful. This March it got warm and they look dead. How do I know if they are alive or dead. I cut them all the way down to the ground. How long will it take for new buds to come out, or are they dead? Thank you - Sharon

Hibisucus come in two basic forms: tropical and hardy. Sadly, the President hibiscus is a tropical variety that is only winter hardy in zones 9 and 10. So, your plants are indeed dead. However, if you love hibiscus there are many wonderful hardy forms that will come back each year even in colder areas of the country so they'd thrive in Kentucky. Check out the hibiscus in our Plant Encyclopedia for recommendations on varieties.
