How to separate and re-plant sedum

I live in zone 5 and wanted to know when is the best time(fall/after blooming) to separate and replant my Sedum (Rosy Glow)? Also, how can I separate the plant without killing it? The plant frames our patio and is overgrown and falling over.

Rosy Glow sedum is a groundcover type sedum that will naturally sprawl and spread. You can divide and replant it almost any time. It reestablishes quickly, and even will root from broken stems without roots placed in soil.
If you prefer an upright growing sedum you may want to choose a different variety, such as Autumn Joy, Neon, or Blade Runner.
