How do I get rid of daylilies out of control?

Just bought a home with Daylilies & Strife everywhere. They are out of control. They haven't been tended to in almost 10 years. Although I love them (in moderation), they are taking over the property. I have considered weed killer. Is there another way to get rid of them?

By strife, I assume you mean loosestrife (either purple or yellow loosestrife can spread through the garden). There's no simple way to eliminate daylilies and loosestrife. Even herbicides often take multiple applications to eradicate them.

A couple of possibilities:

1. dig them out, taking care to remove all sections of the roots.

2. try smothering them with a thick mulch

3. repeat applications of a nonselective herbicide such as glyphosate.
