Heartleaf Bergenia doesn't bloom at all

heartleaf bergenia. 2 years old, hasn't bloomed since I bought it. 1st year, was in pt. shade, 4 hrs of sun each morning, always-damp clay soil. Leaves would unfurl nicely and grow big and turn red all over plant, but no stalks & blooms. 2nd year, moved it to more shade. A mole burrowed through it in winter, but leaves still came up this spring. Right away, the leaves are shriveling & die. Is my soil bad for the plant? Help!

The soil could be contributing to the problem if it is poorly drained clay. That could be causing root rot or other fungal disease to develop. You might try amending the soil with compost to loosen the clay and improve drainage.
