Flowering perennials in poor soil

I would like to plant some flowering perennials and/or trees now in an area at the edge of property that was cleared, but has lots of rocks, parts of roots, and clay soil. Short of digging it up and putting new topsoil in, what grows well in these conditions. It is a large area (approx 20' by 6')

Thanks for writing. There is a large number of perennials that should thrive for you. Start with this list: http://www.bhg.com/gardening/flowers/perennials/best-plants-to-grow-in-clay/
