Dividing Bearded Irises

How often and how severely should you divide Irises? Is it better to do it in the late summer or is it okay to do it now? Also how far do you trim the leaves as you divide them?

You can divide Iris now, because they have stopped blooming, or wait until late summer - either way will give them plenty of time to establish new roots before winter. You can cut the leaves to just six inches above the rhizomes and they will grow back lush before the frost kills them back.
