cutting back princess diana clematis for transplanting

thank you for the responds to my princess diana moving question. Now that it is growing how far should i cut it back for transplant and is it best to do it in aug or sept.

Thanks for writing. It's always best to transplant in spring or fall if you can because temperatures are cooler and it's less stressful on the plant. When you do cut them back, remove no more than a quarter of the growth so the plants have plenty of leaves to gather energy and recover.
