Cement Blocks as flower containers

Using cement blocks for a container. They are in a shady spot, maybe 4-5 hrs of sun a day. Always moist. I would like to put some perennial flowers/plants in the holes to soften the blocks. Any suggestions. Zone 4-5

It sounds as though shade tolerant groundcover would be the best choice. Something such as lamium, vinca, waldsteinia, or ajuga would work.
