can i transplant big elderberry bushes?

I have to relocate two elderberry bushes. Each is going into its fourth year, reached maturity in 2010. They grew at high-speed, but I never pruned them because i didn't know how; they were bushy and wild. I "cut" some broken branches and various leaves last year, but had no clue what i was doing. Can they be transplanted to another spot in the same garden? Should I hire a professional to prune them afterward? I really want to keep these lovelies!

Your best bet would be to severely prune the elderberry shrubs before transplanting them. You can cut them back to within a few inches of the ground with no permanent damage. Then dig up as large a root ball as practical to move the shrub to its new location. Keep the transplant watered well all summer.
