Can I prine a Wisteria now? It is looking wild!

I have a three-year old Wisteria that I may have over-pruned in March. I had no flowers until a few now (July); but the plant is wild looking, growing every old which way and not adhering to the trellis. Can I prune it now so it looks a little more civil?

Hi,

Thanks for writing. July is actually a great time to prune wisteria; many experts recommend cutting off the ends of all of the wisteria's fast-growing sideshoots just beyond the seventh leaf. That will make new shoots appear. As they grow, cut the new shoots back when they've developed a couple of leaves. This will encourage your plant to develop a nice, healthy framework.
