Can I plant perennials and bulbs together?

Can I plant spring perennials (tulips) and summer/fall perennials in the same place in the garden?

Thanks for writing. As a general rule, you can plant groundcovers and other "loose" perennials directly over your bulbs. But avoid perennials such as coneflower, baptisia, peonies, and others that form a dense crown --- your bulbs will have trouble growing up through those plants.
