Are there any ground covers that make a good alternative to a lawn?
If the site is in full sun, you have several choices of ground covers that will withstand some foot traffic. They won't hold up to weekly touch football games, and croquet would be a challenge on them, but they will withstand periodic forays through them. One supplier sells an entire line of such ground covers called Stepables. Here are a few for you to consider:
- Ajuga (Ajuga)
- Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
- Creeping speedwell (Veronica)
- Moneywort (Lysimachia nummularia)
- New Zealand brass buttons (Leptinella squalida)
- Thyme (Thymus)
