Watering Schedule for Lawns in Northeast in Fall
I live on Martha's Vineyard and want to know what watering schedule I should use for my lawn from September to November. I have an irrigation system. For example, should I water once a week for 1 hour? Twice a week for 30 minutes each time? In the early morning, late afternoon, etc. ?
The length of time and frequency to water lawns depends on a number of factors, including soil type and the delivery rate of the water. The goal is to apply enough water to soak the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches without producing runoff. Sandy soils will need watering more frequently for shorter periods than clay soils. Typically they'll need watering a couple times per week whereas clay soils should need watering only once per week if rainfall is insufficient. Generally, early morning is the most efficient time to water.
