Spots on Lawn

Strange black/grey spots have shown up on my St. Augustine lawn. When we stepped on the spots to see if the grass was possibly burned, a powdery substance comes up from the grass. What could this be? I thought maybe some type of fungus or mold, but I have never seen anything like this. Please help!

This may be slime mold. IF so, you have nothing to worry about. It's not attractive, but is harmless to lawns. Slime molds show up after humid nights when there's dew on the grass. and usually dry up during the day, leaving a disgusting looking blotch on the lawn, usually a few inches across.

Without seeing, that's just a guess. But most lawn diseases kill the grass, leaving brown or yellow patches, so it doesn't sound like that.
