How far along in the fall can you still sow new seeds for grass?

I live in zone 6 and wanted to know how late in the fall season can you still plant new grass?

Timing for fall grass seeding depends on weather conditions. In Zone 6 it's safest to complete seeding by early October, although if weather conditions remain mild, the new seeding may become well enough established before winter even if seeded into early November. Otherwise, you can wait until the ground freezes and dormant seed (seeds will be in place ready to sprout first thing in the spring.) Or wait until early spring and sow new grass seed as soon as you can work the soil.
