Grass in hard, rocky, dry soil

We cannot grown "any" type of grass (have tried most everything except lawn service). In our backyard we have woods, but right before the woods is 2-3 feet wide & @ least 100 ft long of very dry, rocky, tree roots (some of it). Need advice for cheap fix either grass or cheap perrineal plants or ? Thanking u in advance.

The quickest, easiest way to do this is to spread 6 inches or so of top soil right over the top of the rocky soil. Then plant grass in that. If it's really that rocky and full of roots, trying to till or amend it might be an excercise in frustration, so the over-the-top method could be the ticket.
