wild raspberries

we just acquired 5 acres of wooded land. There are wild growing raspberry "bushes" everywhere. we hope to keep and cultivate some, but need to eliminate the masses from the driveway and areas for other landscaping. what is the best method, especially trying to avoid any chemical defoliants. Will prolifant growth like these also contribute to the hardwoods not thriving?
