Ask Better Homes & Gardens

Experts and BHG readers answer.

We need help with a landscape design for dry shade with clay soil.

I have a front yard, shaded by existing deciduous tree with invasive root system. Soil is clay. Existing lawn has been killed off and we want to convert area to low water, drought conditions. We have placed river rock around base of tree. We need help with the rest of the landscaping. Planting zone is 14 Sacramento valley.

We're not able to design individualized gardens for readers, but we do have many garden plans on the web site which you could view to get some ideas. Also, you could do an advanced search in our plant encyclopedia for plants that are shade tolerant and adapted to your USDA Hardiness Zone (which is Zone 9 in the Sacramento Valley).
