Many tree roots interfere with other plants because they suck all of the nutrients and water from the soil. For this reason, plants with shallow roots, like spring-blooming bulbs, will usually grow under trees. That said, walnuts have a toxin that they produce in their roots and leaves that is deadly to many other plants.
