Trying to get from behind the trees!

Our two beds in the backyard were built around trees, I am not sure of the types but two of them are pine. (Imagine a triangle sort of bed with the trees being the front point) In both of the beds the trees are the front focal point of the beds with the flowers and plants behind them (I have no idea what they were thinking!) I want to replant and redesign my beds and bring them out more from behind the trees so that when I look out my window I see color and beauty and not brown and boring.
