Side-yard landscape design help needed

My newly constructed home has a long pie-shaped side yard connecting the small front yard with a columned porch in the back which is adjacent to the alley garage. This is a narrow Charleston-style home. How can I landscape this yard? Note: the wide end of the pie is at the front and faces East. The long axis of the yard faces South (so lots of sun). Also, approximately halfway along the side yard, there is a French door off the family room which leads to a small brick patio. Thanks!
