Shaded Atrium
I have an open air 9'x9' atrium in the center of my home surrounded by windows on all sides and completely visible by 4 rooms. A 15' Japanese Maple is in the center and shades the atrium. Allen, TX has clay soil. Every planting in the atrium dies, even hostas. We cut the tree back this year-it will shade the atrium again by this time next year. What can I plant that will live and be very attractive since it is a huge focal point? Thanks so much.
Hi,
Thanks for writing. If clay is the problem, you might amend your soil with organic matter, such as compost. That should help your plants do better.
Some shade-loving groundcovers that don't mind hot, dry conditions include vinca, epimedium, and bigroot geranium. Learn more about these plants in our online Plant Encyclopedia! http://www.bhg.com/gardening/plant-dictionary/
