Recycling landscape gravel

The previous owners to our new home were elderly, and to escape the work of weeding laid black plastic with gravel on top in several areas of the yard. I know that I am in for a long period of backbreaking work to remove this so that I can put in more plants. My questions is, are there places that will take the gravel away once I get that far? I have no idea what the next step would be.

I don't know of any place that will haul away gravel. It's just easier for companies who use gravel to work with new material delivered to their sites. You might pin up a flier in a local community center or grocery store or run a "free for the hauling" ad in the newspaper. Talk to your neighbors and inquire with local garden clubs, too. I can just imagine the ground heaving a big sigh of relief after you remove the gravel and black plastic. Best wishes on your project.
