Pine needles, natural cover or rake

We just bought a home with extensive gardens. The flowers are starting to come up. We have a section of our yard that is full of pine trees and the needles seem to fall all year long. Should we be raking those needles or leaving them there as natural cover? Will they make the soil too acidic for flowers? Thanks.
