Conecticut's state flower, the Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) grows in shade, and is at home in the woods. Like most woodland plants, it likes fertile, humus-y, acidic soil. The leaves look somewhat like rhododenron. There are several different cultivars, and some flowers open pink to white or red to pink. This plant can grow up to ten feet tall and wide, but can be pruned to keep it smaller.
