Evergreens with safe roots for foundation planting

Need evergreens with some vertical, yet compact growing habits that with be safe for planting close to my brick house. I am worried about roots damaging basement walls or foundation but want to plant close for insulation, privacy and visual interest year round.

Thanks for writing. Most smaller (dwarf) evergreens have porportionately smaller root systems so you shouldn't need to worry about them. In your area, look for compact varieties of yew, juniper, and boxwood as starters.
