Slugs on hosta

How do I keep the slugs from ruining my hostas? The slug bait gets washed away. I have tried newspaper and coffee grounds. Do you have any other suggestions? Also, can I cut the eaten leaves back at any time of the year? They are not attractive now that they are eaten.

Well I recommend a product called Escar-Go!. It's a slug repellent that actually works best when the soil is moist and it should not move on you when it rains. You can buy it from Garden's Alive, www.GardensAlive.com

As far as the leaves are concerned, you can safely remove any that are really unsightly, but I'd still leave as much growth as possible so the plant can build up strength before winter.
