Insects in lettuces

How to eradicate bugs in a salad garden without poisoning everyone?
Submitted by BHGPhotoContest

There are several techniques that you can use to keep insects on salad greens under control. During cool weather, you can cover the plants with floating row cover, a lightweight spun bonded fabric sometimes used for frost control. It also acts as a physical barrier to keep most bugs out of the crop it covers. Other techniques that you can use: spray the salad greens with a forceful spray of water to blast the bugs off the plants or use a non-toxic spray such as insecticidal soap, which is toxic to soft-bodied bugs such as aphids, but not to humans. Even so, wash the salad crop thoroughly before eating if you use a pest control product.
