Shaping a jade plant

how do you suggest I shape 2 jade plants that I started from shoots of a larger plant I no longer have? Each plant is growing horizontal stems making the plant less attractive and lopsided. I cut off one large horizontal stem for rooting and want to cultivate a beautiful jade for my granddaughter who now wants one at age 12! Now, I had to stake the plant! Is my alternative to root branches and start from scratch? I am in zone 6. thx.

Although jade plants are not fast growers, they respond fairly well to pruning and shaping. You can remove unwanted stems or shoots. And you can tie up the remaining ones to a stake until they become woody enough to support their own weight.
