The amount and frequency to water orchids depends on the type of orchid. Some come from high rainfall areas, and should be kept constantly moist. Others need to dry out considerably between waterings. None like to have soggy roots, and most need watering once per week or less.
The type of fertilizer to use depends on what type of growing medium the orchid is in. Those growing in bark need a fertilizer with a 3:1:1 ration of nitrogen to phosphorus to potassium. Those in other growing media should have a 1:1:1 ratio. Some growers like to use a weak solution of fertilizer with every watering. Others prefer fertilizing once per month or so during active growth of the orchids.
