african violet too large

I have an unusual variety of african violet that has grown so large, it looks like it is trying to escape out the window. The leaves are round with a point, and the flowers are purple. It is a tuberous stemmed plant. There are 2 to 3 small flowers on a stem the rises well above the plant. It needs to be trimmed or replotted. The pot is not large enough to support the plants growth. Can I cut trim this plant, and how would I go about doing this.

Because African violet grows from a crown, and doesn't form side branches, it's not really possibly to prune it for shaping. You could remove some of the older, larger leaves and start new, smaller plants from them. But you could also repot the plant into a larger container that is more in scale with the plant.

It could also be that the african violet is a trailing variety, in which case the growth habit is normal.
