Woodland plants

I have planted some ferns under two large, old apple trees. What are some other woodland type plants that would grow well in this area? I am in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Hi, Well if the ferns are doing well, you could try other shade-lovers such as sweet woodruff, wild ginger, lamium, vinca, hosta, Virginia bluebells, violet, lungwort, etc. Just understand that as apple trees mature they compete strongly with the plants growing beneath them so it may be difficult to get too many things to thrive under there long term.
